Congress ended federal recognition, sovereignty and all obligations to 109 Indigenous nations.\u00a0 Previous treaties and agreements were revoked.\u00a0 2.5 million acres of land was no longer protected. The Federal government took over tribal land rich in resources, turning much of it into national parks and refuge systems<strong>.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/supremecourt\/text\/391\/404\">Another legal precedent<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1675\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/14\/mnn-us-terminator-act-in-canada\/wounded-knee\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1675\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1675\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1675\" alt=\"AIM against 'termination' \" src=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/wounded-knee.jpg\" width=\"214\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/wounded-knee.jpg 214w, https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/wounded-knee-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AIM resists &#8216;termination&#8217;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Co-operative \u201cWhite\u201d chiefs [tribal councils] helped the termination process to \u201dencourage assimilation into a modern individualist society rather than a savage tribal mentality\u201d.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Indigenous lands were converted to private ownership without their consent.\u00a0 They could be sold by individuals to non-natives.\u00a0 Indigenous jurisdiction was ended. \u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>They had to pay taxes and were governed by state laws.\u00a0 States did not provide services for lack of funds. Health, education, economic development, policing, housing and fire fighting obligations were ended as they were no longer Indians.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Money was withheld until they agreed to termination.\u00a0 Afterwards the land and money was transferred to a corporation. Natives became shareholders, receiving 100 shares of stock. Much went to lawyers.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Children could receive shares only through inheritance, which could be inherited by non-natives.\u00a0 Shares could be sold.\u00a0 Non-natives controlled the corporations. Corporations owned the surface and regional corporations owned the resources. \u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Taxes put native enterprises out of business, falling below the poverty line. 40% were unemployed. If they were given something from the forced sale, they were not eligible for welfare. More land was sold to buy food.\u00a0 Valuable resources made them not eligible for benefits. \u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Termination was devastating, forcing them onto welfare; 75% school drop out, states closed down schools in communities. Termination caused alcoholism, suicide, low education, family break ups, poor housing, high drop out, high imprisonment, and decreased life expectancy.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Indigenous were excluded from the Bureau of Indian Affairs\u2019 higher Indian education funds as they were no longer \u201cIndians\u2019. \u00a0\u00a0Hospitals and clinics were closed as they did not meet state standards.\u00a0 Infant mortality rose by 300%.\u00a0 No dental or eye care were available.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1676\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/14\/mnn-us-terminator-act-in-canada\/us-army\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1676\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1676\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1676\" alt=\"US army APCs at Wounded Knee.\" src=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/US-army.jpeg\" width=\"273\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US Army APCs at Wounded Knee.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Youth resistance groups like American Indian Movement AIM rose up to protest termination.\u00a0 [AIM song\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OJCxHsoiSrs\">A.I.M. song<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Presidents Nixon and Johnson declared that forced termination was clearly devastating.
