MNN. NOV. 6, 2026 IROQUOIS AND GERMANY STILL AT WAR.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
On June 13, 1942, a group of Iroquois, led by chief Angus Horn of the Mohawk tribe, stood on the steps of the Washington Capitol and declared war on Germany, Italy and Japan, much to the surprise of passersby.<\/strong>
\n\u00a0<\/strong>
\nThe declaration of war on Germany was actually technically redundant, since the Iroquois Confederacy already declared war on the country during World War I, and the Versailles Treaty never formalized peace between these two particular sides. (In fact, the peace treaty at the end of World War II did not do so, either, so one might argue the war is still going on.)<\/strong>
\n\u00a0<\/strong>
\nThe declaration was more than just an act of solidarity with the rest of America; it was actually a political move in the long Iroquois struggle against the United States and Canada regarding their sovereignty. A 1941 court case had just declared that Native American nations are subject to federal law, and the war declaration was a symbolic refutation of that decision by presenting the Iroquois as a sovereign power. It also allowed Iroquois men to volunteer to serve in the U.S. military while still upholding their claim that they\u2019re not U.S. citizens and thus cannot be drafted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

We are reminding our people and the foreign visitors on turtle island that we are each indigenous sovereigns according to our way. The US tried to illegally conscript our men for their wars. We are not citizens of their corporations of USA and Canada. We accepted Germany’s surrender like everyone else according to the kaianerekowa great peace. We must <\/strong>remind our women to tell our children that when Germany declared unconditional surrender it applied to all who had conflicts with them, us included. Like everyone else we accepted their surrender. Otherwise we may have to make a truce with Germany.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
