July 21, 2013. <\/strong><b>In the 1930s \u201cthe modern state laid claim to the individual body for its own social, economic or military needs.\u201d \u201cUseless bodies were made useful by being used in the national project of regeneration\u201d.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3123\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/nature-preserve.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3123\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3123\" alt=\"The lab!\" src=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/nature-preserve.gif\" width=\"311\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The lab!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>In March <\/b><b>1942, a group of scientific and medical researchers went to Norway House, Cross Lake, God\u2019s Lake Mine, Rossville, and The Pas in Northern Manitoba Canada. Conditions were \u201cdeplorable\u201d. The people were starving. Their task was to conduct experiments on us through controlled starvation. Sponsors were Indian Affairs, the New York-based Milbank Memorial Fund, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Hudson\u2019s Bay Company. Managers were Dr. Percy Moore of Indian Affairs Medical Services and Dr. Frederick Tisdall, a RCAF Wing Commander.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>10 Nuremberg Code Principles came out of the Nuremberg Doctors Trials addressing the atrocities of Nazi doctors and scientists as ethically wrong. Scientists viewed it \u201cas a code for barbarians and not for civilized physician investigators\u201d of our people.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>During and after the war hunger was epidemic among Indigenous people. Violating the Nuremberg Code the researchers saw residential schools and our communities as \u201cexperimental materials\u201d and \u201claboratories\u201d to pursue their political and professional interests. 50% of Indigenous people died during and after these experiences. The researchers argued that white people had to be protected from Indian \u201creservoirs\u201d and \u201cvectors\u201d of diseases like tuberculosis!! The James Bay Survey, at Attawapiskat and Rupert\u2019s House, searched for the connection between food, nutrition, and the \u201cIndian Problem\u201d.<a href=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/canada-uses-hunger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3124\" alt=\"canada uses hunger\" src=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/canada-uses-hunger-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/canada-uses-hunger-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/canada-uses-hunger-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/canada-uses-hunger.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Researchers found a terrible \u201cstate of malnutrition\u201d leading to general apathy, slowness, inertia and premature ageing.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Indigenous were to be lead away <\/b><b>from racial indolent habits caused by their easy means of feeding themselves by hunting and fishing. <\/b><b>Moore, in a 1941 article, said that, because \u201cthe Indian\u201d has the \u201cpsychology of a child,\u201d researchers should not tell them about the research.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Studies were made possible by their access to deliberately starved children through being made wards of the state. \u201cControls\u201d and experimental subjects were set up of children that were deprived for two to five years of nutritionally inadequate diets and denied dental care to create anemia.<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/indian-made.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3125\" alt=\"indian made\" src=\"https:\/\/mohawknationnews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/indian-made.jpeg\" width=\"212\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>In the 1950s, Indian Affairs socially engineered a solution to the \u201cEskimo Problem\u201d of hunger and \u201cdependency\u201d. The Ahiarmiut of Ennadai Lake \u201cexperimentally\u201d were relocated to isolated animal-less areas without their consent. Hunger, starvation, and misery killed many of them. Indian Affairs Robert Phillips wrote to the Deputy Minister in 1955 that it was useful for the Department to \u201cthink of 9,000 Eskimos as a laboratory experiment and give the imagination full rein on what might be done to improve the culture.\u201d We continue to be \u201cexperimental materials\u201d and \u201claboratories\u201d for scientific and social experimentation. They are part of a larger institutionalized and dehumanizing colonial racial ideology that continues to be Canada\u2019s policies towards us. Though we developed most of the food eaten worldwide, we continue to be one of the most starved.
